Sign and license display requirements

Licensees have a responsibility to display identifying signs and licenses in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. Signs must meet all required specifications and are available for purchase from various sign vendors.

Automotive repair dealers


Automotive repair dealers are required, per Business and Professions Code section 9884.17, to display the automotive repair dealer sign. The sign includes information on consumer rights and how to contact BAR if the consumer needs BAR assistance.

Mobile automotive repair dealers


Mobile automotive repair dealers must provide the customer a paper copy of the automotive repair dealer sign with each work order. Additionally, mobile automotive repair dealers must display the following information on any online advertisement and each vehicle used to perform mobile automotive repair:

  • Business name
  • Registration number
  • Telephone number

Note: The business name and registration number must be in a clearly visible location in print type of at least 72 point font or three-quarters of an inch in height and width.

Brake and lamp stations


Smog Check stations


Smog Check stations are required to display the Notice to Consumers and a sign identifying the services it is licensed to perform. The Notice to Consumers is provided at no charge by BAR to Smog Check stations upon initial licensure or by request by contacting BAR Field Office Support.

Display of licenses


Automotive repair dealer registrations must be displayed in a place and manner conspicuous to customers. Additionally, station, inspector, and technician licenses must be posted prominently under glass or other transparent material in an area frequented by customers.
