Biometric palm scanners
Biometric palm scanners are an important component of the equipment used to perform Smog Check and vehicles safety systems inspections. These devices are used to authenticate the licensee performing the inspection, helping to deter inspection fraud and unlicensed activity. Licensee biometric data is collected by BAR through an enrollment process and is verified when the licensee scans their palm on the biometric palm scanner to perform each inspection.
Enrollment
Before a licensee can perform inspections using the BAR-OIS and BAR-SIS, they must complete biometric enrollment to establish a palm data profile. Biometric enrollment is completed at BAR field offices and takes about 15 minutes to complete. Contact BAR Field Office Support for enrollment dates and times.
During biometric enrollment, BAR staff will:
- Verify your identity
- Review data collection notices
- Take your photo
- Scan your palms to establish your biometric palm data profile
Be sure to bring the following items with you to the field office:
- A valid, government-issued photo identification document (other than an inspector badge), such as a driver license, passport, or military identification
- A proof of identification document showing your legal name and signature such as a social security card or credit card
- Your BAR-issued inspector badge (if received prior to enrollment) and inspector license number
