ENHANCED SCAN TOOL REQUIREMENT

Section 3340.16.5 (a)(13) of the California Code of Regulations request Test and Repair Stations to have and Enhanced Scan tool. An Enhanced scan tool must be capable of: Retrieving Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), and include the definitions for DTCs. Retrieving and storing live and freeze frame data streams from vehicles, onboard computer systems. Retrieving and storing OBDII monitor status. Communicating with all standardized OBDII communication protocols including Controller Area Network (CAN). Have manufacturer specific diagnostic capabilities beyond the generic functionality for those vehicles the Station repairs. These capabilities are described in the Society of Automotive Engineers document number J2190. These capabilities are required to be updated for the most currently available model year vehicles.
