Doug Balatti, Assistant Chief

Biography

Picture of Doug Balatti, BAR Assistant Chief Doug Balatti was appointed by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. to the position of Assistant Chief of the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) in August 2011. As Assistant Chief, Balatti is responsible for policy development and oversight of the Bureau's Smog Check Program.

Balatti has over 35 years of experience in the private sector. During that time, he worked over 28 years at his family's new car dealership in Los Banos, CA. At the dealership, he held a variety of positions and oversaw all aspects of the business, including sales, service, customer relations, and marketing. After selling the dealership, he worked in commercial and residential real estate.

He has extensive, hands-on experience in dealing with consumers, manufacturers, and both new and used car dealers. His knowledge of the automotive marketplace, his commitment to consumer protection, and his dedication to improving air quality benefits all Californians.

A native of Los Banos, Balatti holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of the Pacific and a Master's degree in International Business Management from the Thunderbird Graduate School of Global Management.

Balatti oversees the branch of BAR responsible for establishing protocols for testing and reducing emissions from mobile sources, monitoring California's progress in reducing motor vehicle emissions, and developing and implementing new technologies designed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Smog Check Program. This branch is also responsible for establishing education and training standards for Smog Check technicians.
