Step 3: What happens next?

After your application for a Gold Shield Certification is received by BAR, and passes initial criteria, an inspector from the local BAR field office will visit your shop for a Quality Assurance Inspection. A Quality Assurance Inspection may include:

  • A verification of compliance with license requirements
  • A verification of compliance with signage requirements
  • A verification of compliance with estimate, repair order, invoice and record keeping requirements
  • A verification of possession of required manuals and publications
  • A verification of compliance with tool and equipment requirements
  • Evaluations of smog check technicians’ abilities

Warning: The application that you downloaded in the previous step has more detailed information about the requirements for a Gold Shield Certification, including what can be included in a Quality Assurance Inspection.

The inspector will also clarify any issues with your application and will submit a report to the BAR Licensing Unit. You should receive a response within 4-6 weeks of the time BAR receives your application.
